The Art of Taking a Yoga Face Selfie

For quite some time now, yoga "selfies" have caused a stir in the yoga community, and with the recent New York Times article profiling them, I think it is about time Yoga Face Selfies also get the coverage they deserve.

Now, even if you really want to try Yoga Face Selfies, please remember that not all poses are suited for every face, please carefully consider each Yoga Face Selfie pose before trying that pose yourself. I repeat, this is not for everyone. Please don’t ever hurt your face in order to get a picture — it's so not worth it!

If you do choose to participate though, you will be warmly welcomed into an ever growing community. One of the easiest ways to get started is to join the "yoga face selfie post a day” challenge. You can post your pictures to Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook with the hashtag #YogaFaceSelfie.

Regardless of why you want to post Yoga Face Selfies, there are a few guidelines to making them look great. Follow these simple tips for the perfect yoga selfie face, and you'll be soon be getting nonstop likes!

1. Pick the right pose. Usually the more difficult poses are the poses people will like the most, as they are inspiring. The photo below was awkward to take, but I didn't let that stop me.

2. Focus on location, location, location. Selfies in awesome locales are the best (my selfie above was taken in my bathroom, but deserved to be on the set of jaws - so that's where I put it). If you aren’t somewhere pretty or outdoors, photoshop your image to give your yoga face selfie the backdrop it deserves.

3. The fewer accessories, the better. Yes, this sounds crazy shallow, but your wardrobe (or lack thereof) matters. For yoga face selfies, it is important that people be able to see your form. Wear fitted accessories, or none at all, to allow people to see what you are doing. Just think, if I'd worn a shirt in the previous example, it would not have even a fraction of the impact my chest hair gives it.

Another example would be a face yogi striking a pose in designer eye glasses... that is going to garner way more likes than a face yogi in a ski mask. That said, if you are at the top of the Swiss alps, a ski mask might make more sense.

4. Set up. Although some people have a tripod for their camera, not everyone does. One work around is to set your phone or camera up on a timer and place it on blocks, furniture, or your favourite treds to give your shot the vantage point it deserves. Generally speaking, shooting from below makes the person in the photo appear more powerful.

Note: in spite of the moniker "selfie", you could cheat... and have a close friend take the photo for you (shockingly, a lot of unscrupulous people *actually* do this).

5. Don't push too hard. Don’t hurt yourself to get into a pose your face isn’t ready for. Be where you are today and be content to dream of where you will be tomorrow.

6. Have fun. It's easy to forget funness when you have a camera focused on you (and worldwide yoga face fame is potentially a shutter release away), but this is the most important part. Remember: It's just you doing your yoga face, a yoga face you *happen* to be sharing with the world. Never forget: The camera has no mercy and will show you just the way you are - so be happy and confident... or you'll regret it!

Now, go forth! Take some yoga face selfies, have fun, and share them with me on Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #YOGAFACEstagram so I know you read this article. Good luck! By using these straight forward tips - you shouldn't have any problems getting all the likes your heart desires!
